Because why not: Let’s talk about Merrell Trail Gloves

Sometimes you have to work at a place that won’t let you wear your great VFFs but will still let you wear sneakers. You are upset at having to leave your favorite shoes at home, and for a couple of days you go in to work wearing some old basketball shoes from the Dark Ages you find in your closet. They feel like crap, and your once liberated feet can’t handle being suffocated like that. What is one to do when they want a minimalist feel but need it in a more traditional shoe? These Merrell Trail Gloves are an option.

Half Marathon in Two Days, Watch Me Live! [Death by Running]

As the 11th Annual Memorial Marathon may very well be the first and last marathon I ever run, I decided to go ahead and sign up to become a Runkeeper Elite. This basically means that I might be cooler than you are in this one, tiny niche of the world. That is, unless you also have an Elite subscription, which in that case we should have a party.

So what does this mean? Well, it means the power of the internet makes stalking easy.

YWCA 2-Minute 5k is tomorrow

Just a reminder for those people who desperately need to know information about my doings: tomorrow is the YWCA’s 2-Minute 5k event that I will happily be running in even though my body in the last week or so has begun fighting itself from within.

I haven’t been especially prudent in my running schemes as of late. While the weather has had its fits, it’s mostly been warm enough to run (although the wind is another story). On top of that, some sort of nasty bacteria seems to have made its new home my upper respiratory system and refuses to leave even though I have given it an eviction notice. The way I accomplished that was to punch myself in the chest repeatedly a few days ago after a fit of violent coughing at 2am. Hopefully the message was received. As of this writing, I have a slight cough, but otherwise no worse for wear.

What this means for the race tomorrow is that I will be overly sluggish and grouchy (normal) AND coughing (abnormal), but I know I will be fine otherwise. Two moons ago I put in an OK time for 3.12 miles of 31:42, or four minutes slower than my time in my last marathon. The catch here, though, is that, unlike before, I have been pacing myself more by adding a minute of rest per mile. If I had run straight through the time may have been a couple of minutes less. I haven’t done a straight 5k in a while, though, so it may very well have killed me had I attempted it.

Of additional note is that I am still going to run this with my bare feets. Having a slightly slower time as a result doesn’t bother me too much when I remind myself of that. And while I am missing that 3mm of padding that Vibrams provide, I feel like my pace is still ok. What I need to stop doing is worrying about the pace at all, and just have fun. On the other hand, I do enjoy beating people while running barefoot, so I don’t know if I can sate that part of me that likes to gloat if I am getting passed all the time. I’m too vain to let it happen.

We shall see tomorrow, though, how it all turns out. And if you are so inclined, the donations page is still available if you would like to help the YWCA.

I signed up for it and let’s help Japan [Half Marathon]

Almost two weeks ago I posted a note asking people to push me over the edge and sign up for a half marathon, and it just so turns out that my will power to stay as far away from doing physical activity was broken. I signed up for it. I threw my hat into the ring, punched the dimpled chad of acceptance, took the Pepsi Challenge and chose “yes.” Something like that. In any case, it looks like I have paid my way to wrecking my body in the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon, scheduled for May 1st, 2011, but I will also be running for Japan.

Someone pressure me into running a half

Running is pretty healthy, right? The people that do it generally think that they “feel better” afterwards or have “a better outlook on things.” It’s all really just chemicals and dopamine and whatnot that causes these feelings; something about how exercising is good for you. It’s a whole lot of flim-flam, if you ask me, although I will admit that after a run I generally fell much better than before. My body must just be conforming to the hype. Over the last few months that I have been running, I feel like I have done pretty well carving out the ability to do a 5k with relative ease. Coming soon, however, is a chance to run a half marathon, the OKC Memorial Marathon to be precise, and I cannot decide if that’s something I should do.

Hey, I am running in this race

In continuing my goal of running around like a silly person, I have just signed up for the YWCA’s 2 Minute 5K, set to commence on April 16. The general event info goes like this:

A woman is sexually assaulted every 2 minutes. Thanks to the YWCA, help is available to heal in the aftermath of this tragedy.
To raise awareness for sexual assault victims and to raise funds for victim assistance programs, the YWCA is hosting the 2 Minute 5K! Join us on Saturday, April 16, at the Regatta Park and Pavilion off the Oklahoma River, located at 725 S. Lincoln Boulevard. Registration starts at 8 and the 2 Minute 5K starts at 9 a.m.

Leading up to the race, each participant will have their own personal web pages to help raise money to support YWCA programs to help victims of sexual assault and to help prevention education programs. For more information on YWCA programs to help victims of sexual violence, visit www.ywcaokc.org.
