Fort Pickens

One of the days we spent in Pensacola had a quick and very interesting detour to Fort Pickens, a fort completed in 1839 to protect a navy yard in Pensacola Bay and then later retconned to be used during various wars up until WWII, when Atom bombs made a relatively small fort made mostly of brick and mortar pretty moot.

If you want any more information about the fort, check this out. It was quite neat, and I recommend it if you ever happen to be in the area simply because it’s “free,” and you can climb around on it an your leisure. “Free” is in quotes because you have to pay to get on the road that leads to the fort and the beaches, but the ticket allows you to come back for a week. Not bad for $8.
