One Week Down

posted in Work on Feb 10, 2008

Well, it’s been half a fortnight and I’m still alive. I suppose this working thing isn’t horrible. It is very tiring, but not bad. There’s an interesting difference between work and school outside of simply being paid to work instead of paying to do work and being rewarded with useless letter grades. I have never had school spirit. Ever. I never cheered for the football team. I never dressed up on the stupid school spirit days. I never tried out for any school electoral positions. None of those things ever felt like a beneficial endeavor while in school. But even in the short time at work, I’ve come to like the atmosphere and I might just try to get involved. Let me explain this a little more.

For those of you who don’t know, I’ve taken a position with a local (but national) insurance company. My work will, to start, be to begin claims for our policyholders (or claimants) who need help after a wreck or housefire or whatever they need. I had my reservations about the job at first, thinking it may be something that I could really dislike, but so far I’m enjoying it. We have seven weeks of training, which essentially puts me right back where I didn’t want to be (in the classroom), but since the dynamic is totally different, I actually enjoy it. There’s an interesting dichotomy between my feelings for learning in school and learning on the job.

So that’s what I’ll be doing. Within the company are opportunities to help with local schools or with political things and such. I hate politics, so I probably won’t think about joining that group. I could potentially join the other group because it’s about helping kids, but we’ll see about that too. I’m going to have to work nights, so I don’t know how that will work. I get off work when school starts in the morning, so I can say for certain that I’ll have the energy to stay up and help with whatever it is that they’re doing. I’ll have to ask about that.

Another interesting thing about the job is that I don’t mind wearing company logo stuffs. In school I could care less about getting school oriented clothing, but now it’s not bad at all. Plus I have a bitchin’ key card thingy.

So yeah, so far so good. I have to take a licensing exam soon for the job before I can actually do anything. It might actually be kinda fun. (Probably not, but here’s to hoping.)
